Canon
Byakuya and Renji are Soul Reapers/shinigami. The two's first appearance in canon was together, when they came to the world of the living to collect Rukia and take her back to Soul Society. Byakuya is the Captain of the 6th Division and Renji is his Vice-Captain. For a long time, Renji held a grudge against Byakuya for separating Rukia and himself (who grew up together on the streets of Inuzuri) and wanted nothing more than to surpass his strength.
