It portrays Kirk.

This is a companion piece to Butler's First Spock. According to comments below, they are the first K/S illustrations she created.

It was printed as the front cover of First Time #54 in 2002.

I know from what Pat Stall used to say, that it is especially difficult to get James Kirk just right but Shelley has done it. I'll never know how but she is simply a master." [1]

The front cover is an exquisite illo of a close-up of Kirk's face. Shelley captured the essence of what Jim is in that illo. We see that famous Kirk grin that melted many hearts (including one of a certain Vulcan). A grin that makes us guess is directed to Spock. We saw the realism with which Shelley draws little details like the long eyelashes; the contour of his nose (I think one of the most difficult parts some artist confront in portraying Kirk); the softness of his lips arched in that famous grin. The texture of the hair and that rebellious lock of hair falling in his forehead seems so real. We even see the veins in his forehead. And the play of light and shadows in his face make this illos one of the most beautiful and realistic I had seen of Kirk. [2]

Now that is simply... perfection. The best rendition of Kirk I've ever seen from what must be the best shot of him in the whole TOS. Shatner at his absolute handsomest. It makes my heart twist a little to think I'll never get to see him look like that in the flesh. I took to keeping the zine next to me whenever I read another zine and when they mention how good-looking Kirk is, I look at this portrait. I melt just a little every time. Strong decisive features with soft skin and sexy eyes and that lock of hair... *sigh* [4]
