Reactions and Reviews

After the Horsemen debacle, Methos drinks himself to death (literally) and then has a slight mental break. As in, he forgets he's Methos. Or a Watcher. Or, you know, immortal. All he is now is mild mannered Adam Pierson, a 35-year-old grad student who is prone to odd, buzzing headaches and who is occasionally approached by strange men with tattoes on their left wrist. Joe, of course, takes this information to Mac, who isn't impressed. At least not until he actually meets Adam Pierson and suddenly finds himself explaining immortality to the oldest immortal of all. Which, it must be said, is pretty damn awesome. Surprisingly enough, the absolute best part of this all-around great story is the spot-on characterization of Adam Pierson. Valentin's managed to excise the conniving warrior Methos from the brilliant academic Adam without changing the core of the character, and the end result just perfect. Neither an original character nor a canon one, Adam can only be described as one of the best characters I've seen in fanfic, ever, and he is even more delightful when playing off of Duncan. Part fluff, part angst, part humor, and every part wonderful, this is a fic that can satisfy any taste.[1]

Highlights: Methos thinks he is Adam Pierson. (Wonderful, wonderful characterization of Adam Pierson by the way.)
Low Points: Self inflicted immortal amnesia? A bit of a reach, that one.[2]

So, someone on one of the many fan fiction related mailing lists I'm on requested a recommendation for a Duncan/Methos amnesia fic. Immediately, Brothers and Other Strangers by Valentin came to mind. The story picks up after Revelation 6:8, and Methos has just returned to Paris. Depressed about the whole Horsemen fiasco and certain that Macleod will never want anything more to do with him, Methos drinks himself into oblivion. The next morning, Adam Pierson, age 35, doctoral candidate and owner of a bookstore, grabs a light jacket and heads out the door. Concerned when he discovers that Methos isn't carrying a sword and claims no knowledge of the Watchers, Joe Dawson sends Macleod to check up on him. Macleod, of course, thinks it's all a trick by the master manipulator, but events prove him wrong. Faced with Adam, a quiet scholar who absolutely refuses to touch a sword, Macleod slowly begins to realize that maybe what he thought he wanted (a gentler, kinder Methos), isn't what he wanted at all. I really love the dialog in this story--Adam's responses to the impossible situation in which he finds himself are just too funny![3]

Nice twist. After the Horsemen debacle Methos is emotionally so damaged that he suppresses his Immortal identity completely and forgets everything. What is Duncan to do?[4]
