Bowsette is a genderswap of Mario villain Bowser, originally created by artist Ayyk92 in a parody webcomic,[1] and later widely adopted by fans. Bowsette has become a notable trans icon among some users.[citation needed]
Pairings
Bowsette/Princess Peach is one of the two main pairings, inspired by Bowser's long-term obsession with the princess. The second, and opposing pairing, is Bowsette/Mario, possibly inspired by the original comic, or simply Mario's role as Bowser's Nemesis.
A third, but significantly less popular pairing, is Bowsette/Booette, featuring the gender-swapped version of King Boo, created as an addition to the Bowsette fad.
Fandom Response
Bowsette became a widespread meme, see Know Your Meme. The original artist, haniwa, with surprise on how large a response their comic got,[2], and also commented on recieving fanworks and even a trophy for their contributions.[3] Bowsette's massive popularity led to things like people declaring her "the waifu of 2018."[4]
As of 2022, it is remembered as a notable event on Tumblr.[5]
