Reactions and Reviews

1991

I was drawn to the beginning of this, which I think is some of the best writing this author has ever done. There was such a strong sense foreboding and buildup to the hunt that my stomach twisted, dreading what unknown thing was going to happen. The writing was vibrant, making me feel as though I was there. After the climax of Spock being whisked away to safety on the ship, the story weakened and ended quickly. The relative harmlessness of Spock's trance and his quick recovery were a slight letdown after the drama of the earlier events. Also, while Kirk's intense concern for Spock was heart-warming, I was disappointed in our captain for ignoring Spock's admission that he was not "all right'. The story ends with the two simply kissing and Kirk not in any way questioning or acknowledging Spock's unknown problem (which I assume was just the trauma of the ordeal). I liked the little detail during the hunt about the young alien riding with Kirk so he could ask him questions about joining Starfleet. [1]

1999

This exploration of Kirk's and Spock's involvement in a ritual hunt on a new Federation planet could have been better had the two not been separated during the event. While their being guided in different directions was important to the plot, it didn't allow the reader much time with the two of them. The resolution made up for a lot, although it could have been expanded. Kirk's care and concern are well-written and very satisfying. [2]
