Mostly because after so many (not enough to my taste) stories pairing Bodie/Cowley, it was only fair to award a place to the symmetric pairing Doyle/Cowley. Moreover I know a few eccentrics (!!!) in LJ land and "Pros" lists who don't hide their bent.Though L.A. Scotian is obviously another avatar of M. Fae Glasgow, the present story can hardly be taken as the counterpart or the equivalent for C/D of what Step We Gaily was to B/C. No need for me to write an eloquent plea in order to thwart a controversy about Cowley's character. Not that this Cowley were anyhow better than the former one; he is much worse! But he is also innocuously weird (as well as queer), not in character at all and not pretending to be, and more funny than disturbing.
To be more precise, it's a totally AU story, where Doyle is a rent boy and where the controller of CI5 let his lewd thoughts overcome his usually more lucid mind. As ever, M Fae Glasgow shows her unsuperable talent in describing lust and inner sexual turmoil. I looked for examples but couldn't choose any: I should have quoted half of the story! As for the psychological insights, they are as cruelly true as they are sharply delineated.
There is little more to add; as always with this author, whose style is so personal and recognizable, this short piece of writing is perfectly neat and cleverly done, though much lighter than most of her other works.[1]
