Black Magician is a K/S story by Sharon Travis.
It was published in the print zine Scattered Stars #6.
Part of a Series
This story is part of a series by Travis and were all printed in "Scattered Stars" #6.
All three pieces together form a unified whole and are told from differing points of view. This is an interesting idea that lets us fully into the mind of first Kirk, then Spock, and allows us to see the same scene from their vastly different perspectives. [1]
- Black Magician
- Vulcan Aftermath
- an untitled poem
Summary
"A young sailor jumps ship to look for the devil in the forest he has heard tales of."
Reactions and Reviews
1994
"Black Magician" is a very nicely written alternate universe story which takes place in Scotland, (there's a reference to Montgomery's Inn), during the times of the old sailing ships. Or perhaps it is England. Just an additional line or two would have set the scene a bit more concretely, or was that intentionally done to conform to the vague mysterious feel of the piece? Told in the first person from Kirk POV, we see him as he might have been then, a young man in search of adventure who explores his own world but never - the - less dreams of "ships that sail around the stars". He hears vague rumors of a mysterious magician, dressed in black, living alone in a nearby forest, and feels drawn to investigate. I liked the sense of mystery here created by having the characters never speak to each other until the very end of the story. The well - drawn sex scene, taking place as it does amongst the towering trees and at night is darkly powerful.[2]
This unusual pair of short stories ("Black Magician" and Vulcan Aftermath) is difficult to categorize, but its uniqueness is what makes it quite compelling. Told in the first person of Kirk and Spock, respectively, although they are never named or even talk, we come upon Kirk as a sailor on shore leave at Montgomery's Inn (cute touch). Kirk is drawn to the magician in the forest and there are lots of neat poetic images and lovely, rather ingenuous writing such as: "My heart has stopped beating, or does it beat fast?" and "But the beauty of your body cooled my fire and the beauty of your mind soothed my soul."This German author's command of English (or should I say "Standard"?) has always been exemplary and here it creates an interesting and unique style. I would love to see her expand this piece in to a full story. It would be wonderful. [3]

More of a long poem, but full of lovely images. [4]
