Reactions and Reviews
Because every fandom deserves a silly pirate fantasy. (Okay, almost every fandom.)Forget about CI5, forget about Cowley (though he does make a cameo appearance), forget about Ray as the tough little street cat turned copper. Don't forget about rakish Bodie, here revealed as the Captain of (I kid you not) the Gay Mariner, who takes as his plunder young captive Raymond Doyle, innocent and unused to the ways of the world. No, really, it works!
Make no mistake, this is Bodie's story and his characterization shines through; it's far too easy to see Bodie as a lecherous pirate whose black heart is finally won over by the virtuous (yet still so easily seduced, go figure) Raymond. This version of Doyle is harder to take at first, but as this little gem progresses (it's quite short, unfortunately) you see glimpses of the Doyle we all know later.
Part of the fun of this story is the high style in which it's written, a rollicking pastiche of bodice ripping pirate fantasies. Too often, Pros is laden with violence and emotional angst; this is pure romance, unapologetic, frivolous and satisfying, right down to the very last line. Enjoy it for what it is.[1]
"Black Bodie's Treasure" is a fine historical piece, and demonstrates a flair for 17th century dialogue and a marvellous piratical flavor, neither which was as successfully achieved in the sequel.[2]
