Between Decks is a Star Trek: VOY Chakotay/Paris story by arachne.
Author's notes:
This was my first Voyager story - a little bit of froth inspired by the idea of Tom and Chakotay smouldering in the turbolift. The R rating is for language - not sex, because basically there isn't any. Sorry.
The story was posted to alt.startrek.creative and was archived at R'rain's Slash Archive and the author's own website. It has a sequel called Between Endings that's archived at Trekiverse.
Reactions and Reviews
This is a fabulous little vignette, portraying a small moment in the lives of these two men. The characters have been well drawn in such a short story, Paris shown as only peripheral to Chakotay's existence, more of an annoyance. Paris' intolerance in general is drawn with a few words, his impatience at being stuck in the lift with Chakotay, then how he feels timepassing so slowly. The small incident of being stuck in the turbolift is given a new twist by the discovery that Paris has a weakness, claustrophobia in spaces he cannot escape from. In this sentence the author has conveyed a wealth of background information that causes Chakotay to ponder anew the previous life of this person that he tends to judge so superficially.
I found the humour of the situation, and the desire of the usually staid Chakotay to have the last word really funny. I thought the author did a good job in showing just how Chakotay would have rehearsed the words he was going to use to beat Tom, both men hoping for the last word, Tom as usual winning. The story was well crafted, building from a mild beginning through the action to a very humorous and clever ending. The author finished up the scenario so that there is either the possibility of further
sequels, yet allowing the story to stand alone as a complete moment in their lives. Very nicely done! [1]
