Betrayed is a 175-page gen Star Trek: TOS h/c novel by Mary Rottler & Lynn Syck.
Summary
This hurt/comfort novella focuses on the character of Dr. McCoy, his relationship with Kirk and Spock, and his sense of loyalty -- both to and from these characters as well as to his own oath as a physician and to himself as a man. The novella opens with McCoy sentenced to a penal colony after being convicted of developing a vaccine that proved to be deadly to the population of an alien world. But there are secrets in this story, secrets that could destroy all McCoy and his friends hold dear -- including their own friendships. [1]
Posted Online, Then Revised for Print
From the author, Rottler:
Actually, the entire story was posted on the net and then was greatly revised through input from readers. After that, Randy kindly printed it despite the fact it had been posted on the net. And I believe he received some negative comments from doing so. There are the first four parts posted in ASC archive but the entire story is much longer, and hopefully in readers minds, much better. Reactions and Reviews
Unknown Date
McCoy suffers hellish imprisonment -- and guilt -- for causing a devastating plague. Back on the Enterprise, Kirk's own guilt for testifying against the doctor drives a wedge between him and the crew until they manage to pull back together to find the Orion/Klingon truth behind the frame-up. Excellent characterization and dilemmas, though the 'hurt' part of the HC seems over-done -- surely the guy would be dead by about page 30 or so. [3]
1998
...I just returned from Farpoint, where Betrayed, despitebeing available since June, was our second-best selling zine at the con (trailing only Chekov's Enterprise, which was making its con debut).
Betrayed is an excellent example of both a McCoy story and of classic-style hurt-comfort. A wonderful read. [4]
May I add that the story "Betrayed" published by Orion Press this year is primarily focused on McCoy. The unfinished version/unpolished version has some parts archived on the net however, the official and what I feel is my best work was published by Orion Press. The story revolves around McCoy who is sentenced to hard labor for life for causing the deaths of thousands of lives on a planet. Kirk has difficulty dealing with this loss of his friend and retreats from the crew as he attempts to exonerate his friend. It turned out to be better example than is normal for me and Lynn of showing how the Enterprise crew can work together, pulling Scotty, Uhura Sulu and Chekov into the action in an attempt to assist Kirk and Spock. It does include lots of hurt/comfort.
I haven't heard from anyone who's actually read the final, finished version of Betrayed so I'm not sure how well it was received. But if you like McCoy (I be a McCoy fan) then this might be worth your time. [5]
