Reactions and Reviews
This Classic anthology centers on the series' peripheral characters. Becky Bain's "Not Ever" is a persuasive account of teenaged Devin's first days on the street, after he flees the tunnels and tries, for the first time, to survive on his own. Mooney's "Remember the Oranges" gives tunnel cook William's "backstory": what, as an alcoholic VietNam vet, his troubled life was like before he met sternly compassionate Helper Soon Ling. Sue Glasgow's "And the New Sun Rose" recounts V's problems in accepting the responsibilities of leadership...which Father, though ill, isn't ready to surrender. In Debbie Nockles' "Echoes from the Past," Lena and happily married C run into an old flame of Lena's...revealed as (1) a former tunnel dweller and (2) a male stripper who performs in a leonine demi-mask, cloak, and shaggy body suit with glittery G-string, all to the strains of "Beauty and the Beast" by Stevie Nicks. C's memories of this meeting spark an intriguing coda. As always from this team, the stories are well presented and well edited.[1]
It’s all too yummy for words! [2]
