Being Ray Kowalski is a sort-of Fraser/Kowalski story by isiscolo. It is written from the point of view of Rae, a female version of Ray from an alternate universe who wakes up trapped in Ray's body in the canon Due South universe. In Rae's world, she is happily married to a heterosexual Benton Fraser, but the Fraser she meets in the canon universe is single and (unbeknownst to her) gay.

JS Cavalcante drew a pencil cover illustration for the fic, "The Man in the Mirror," and later wrote a companion piece from Ray's point of view, "Anima."

Reactions and Reviews

There aren't many genderbender stories out there who don't play it just for fun or for sex (or both). This story deals with Rae Kowalski, who has always been a woman, swapping the body with Ray Kowalski. "due South" had always a slight magical feeling to it, so it doesn't feel to constructed or unbelievable. With over 50,000 words, the story takes its time exploring the differences between Rae and Ray and their relationship to Fraser. The sex, when it happens doesn't feel forced and the tension has been slowly built up to it. A very engaging story, which can make you think without being either too preachy or meta-ish. [1]

I really, honestly loved this, the way Rae is almost-but-not-quite Ray, almost-but-not-quite an original character, and the way Fraser reacts to all of it. The way you made it work really amazed me. Fantastic stuff, I really enjoyed reading it. Just sat down and didn't get up until I'd finished. [2]
