Con Report
Not too many conventions can boast of being held in a college dorm but this was the second year in a row for Baycon after giving up looking for a hotel to hold its annual activity. Although a comic convention, Baycon managed to draw a large gathering because science fiction fans had nowhere else to go. Put on by local comic shop Amazing Adventures, Baycon had several well known Bay Area comic artists as guests. Frank Brunner, Ernie Chan, Chris Claremont, Steve Leialoha and Trina Robbins. The special guest was Jack "King" Kirby, the man who helped to make Marvel comics a household word. The artists discussed their plans for the comic characters career moves. usually lasting three days, only two days. Nevertheless, it from many of the western states, many of whom were getting ready for the big comic· convention in San Diego the following week . Despite the guests in attendance, the mood of Baycon was offset by many members complaining of being bored. The film program contained a few good films but it was felt that it needed more variety and more science fiction.
The promoter of Baycon is uncertain of its future, feeling that the convention is more trouble than it is worth. The lack of care in organizing a wider appeal for Baycon showed and may result in reduced attendance next year, if there is one next year. [1]
