The most valuable advice I'd ever received came in the form of criticism from Mary Manchester quite some time back when AVANT-PROPOS was the opening chapter [of Diamonds and Rust] and she pointed out that our characterizations were more than somewhat outre and that adding stories before A-P to lead into it and explain it would help a lot. She couldn't have been more right and I appreciated that, even tho it took over a year to put together the stories that now come before it, I can honestly say that it probably would not have occurred to me to do that had she not brought it up - and the doing made it a lot better than it was.
