August Party 1978 Survey was distributed to fans at the 1978 August Party. Results were printed in the 1979 August Party program book.
The following survey was taken last summer at August Party, and is, so far as we know, the only demographic breakdown ever done of the people who attend our midsummer's bash. Our thanks to Judith Gran, who sent us a copy with her membership for this year's con. So if you have any questions, ask her, not us. And if another survey shows up this year, participate, The bigger the sample, the more valid the results.
The survey makes the distinction between "fans" and "mainstream fans," something that is not clearly explained.
Some Observations
- a total of 128 usable questionnaires were returned ("30 were members of "mainstream" fandom, including 14 zine editors, 19 authors, and 12 artists" -- it is noted there is much overlap with these fans)
- 59% were female and 3/4 were over 20 years of age, 41% were male and 50% were under 20 years of age
- 36% were students, 55% were "employed," 5% serving in the armed forces, 3% were homemakers
