Some Excerpts

So if you’re also someone who doesn’t feel like an Author with a capital A, who is constantly astonished or awed or intimidated by the "real" authors in fandom that seem so prolific and proficient and seem to know what the heck they’re actually doing, who isn’t sure how they got/if they want to get into this whole fanfic thing… come hang with me. Alternatively, if you are one of those expert authors, come teach me how you do it!

Kidding aside, I hope we can have a fun conversation about creativity and inspiration and the wonderful way fanfic— writing it or reading it! —helps us express our love of The Show and feel a part of fandom, as well as about how writing fanfic can make us anxious or inadequate or blocked or disappointed. (Ha. I feel like I should break into song here. Something about the complexity of art and two sides of a coin and overcoming obstacles and the interweaving of creativity and community, preferably composed for me by Sondheim.)

I haven’t written all that much (at last count, I only have twenty or so odd posted stories, while I have friends who seem to write that many in a MONTH), but I have written quite a variety of kinds: long and short, gen and slash, crossover and AU, casefic and PWP, SPN and RPS.

I never even knew internet fandom existed before SPN. There I was, 35 years old with a brand new baby, spending hours and hours in the wee morning nursing on the couch, and that summer while poking around the web I discovered Television Without Pity. Well, the new television season started and I TiVoed a bunch of new shows, Supernatural being one of them. I LOVED IT! I started commenting on the TWoP Supernatural boards and made some friends and then someone once mentioned this thing called "Livejournal." I followed a link over here and-- lo and behold-- there is this thing that people do on the internet. THEY WRITE STORIES. USING CHARACTERS FROM TV SHOWS, AND BOOKS, AND MOVIES. OMG!!!

So from there I soon learned there was something called "slash." SHOCK. And then I discovered there was something called "vidding." SHOCK AGAIN. And I began to make friends with strangers on the Internet who lived on the other side of the world. SUCH SHOCK.

I can't even begin to enumerate all the ways my horizons have broadened from discovering this place, this community of people, this pastime. I love you all so much! {{{{fandom}}}}
