Some Excerpts

I primarily use trusty old Photoshop 7 and sometimes a less rickety Painter 9. By nature, I’m a realist so my stuff tends to be super time-consuming and, well, realistic. But I’m going to pick the pencil back up again more frequently, because I love traditional media and I want to brush up on more of a graphic, cartoon-y style that will lend itself better to narrative and scenes and whatnot. So stay tuned for that and take it with a grain of salt.

I work digitally much the same way I work traditionally, but with digital you can get far more realistic outcomes due to the ability to copy almost directly from your photoref. This is both a blessing and a curse. I do NOT recommend being a slave to your reference. For me, there’s just no point in exactly duplicating something that already exists. Painting right over the photo? Kind of a no-no. Doing a quick sketch to get your proportions down correctly, then painting? Tried and true, back to the invention of photography. Additionally, I appreciate brushstrokes and linework, so when something looks just like a photo, it loses that beautiful human touch. Never be afraid of leaving it rough and juicy. (Oooh, that sounded a little, well…)
