Some Excerpts
You can see I like realism, There’s lots of arguments for and against realism, to draw from imagination or to use reference etc… I’d rather not got there, all I can really say is that it’s up to an individual to decide what best suits them. Of course having said that it’s always fun to experiment and try something new^^Anyway back to business, I also love the complex storyline of Supernatural and find inspiration in that. For those types of paintings I try to mesh my love of reference/realism with story ideas.
After seeing Swap Meat, where it’s revealed that there’s a bounty on Dean, I wandered how the demons and monsters knew about this, I figured maybe there’s a staff bulletin board in hell with wanted posters of Sam and Dean Winchester plastered on!…so yeah that’s how the idea for The Winchester Brothers was born.
Mostly I sketch and then paint in layers under it and erase the sketch as the painting takes over. I know some people like to just paint without sketching first, which is cool (actually I wish I could do this or paint in one of those awesome semi-realistic styles *sigh*), people should use whatever works for them. I like sketching because I can sort out problems early on instead of freaking out in the painting stage ^^ The only thing I regret with The Winchester Brothers, is that I didn’t play around with their poses much. Lately I’ve gotten into the habit of messing around at the sketching stage, it’s fun and I’m hoping it will help me improve. Here are some sketches from my last painting, I’m slowly learning to loosen up a little:
I’m using Photoshop cs5 now (used to have Elements) and mostly use the default brushes and sometimes various custom brushes... And a wacom intuos 4 tablet on a MacBook Pro. I also have Manga Studio, but don’t use it a lot.
