It was published in the print zine Within the Mirror #12.
Summary
"McCoy has Kirk order the crew to participate in a writing contest is order to relieve boredom but Kirk asks Spock for help in writing his story."
Reactions and Reviews
An adorably funny story where McCoy tells Kirk that the antidote for a restless and bored crew is a writing contest with the theme of a love story. It's not to be more than ten pages (sounds doable!) and first prize is something called "Milo Venus aphrodisiac"! Oh boy!Anyway, Kirk tries to write and can't so he shows it to Spock for suggestions. Spock agrees to write it for him and when Kirk suggests doing research with Chapel. Spock says no—he's a homosexual.
Kirk gets upset: "I'm not going to write a love story with a fag!" Spock tells him to get over it.
I loved: "It was a taut day."
Later Kirk apologizes and Spock tells him he was the first human, besides his mother, to pronounce his name. Spock makes him rare steak for dinner.
I just loved this charming story! [1]
This story started out nice and fast-moving, with sharp and expressive dialogue. I didn't get the title, though. There was a lot I liked in the story, but alsosome other things I want to comment on. A minor thing, not necessarily a valid criticism in the big scheme of things: We can assume this is a Mirror story just because it's in a Mirror zine, but if it weren't in a Mirror zine, there would need to be some indication close to the beginning whether it takes place in the Mirror universe or in ours after the events of the Mirror episode, whether it's the Mirror characters in our universe or ours in the Mirror universe, or some combination thereof, or what. I suppose depicting Kirk as all bitchy and impatient with McCoy could have been the first hint that this was Mirror Kirk in the Mirror universe, but I didn't know until the second page. I'm not certain I buy that the ISS Enterprise crew would do something like a love story writing contest, but then, we don't know all that much about them, about their day-to-day lives. It's virtually certain that this crew would hate the boredom of star-mapping, though; and with the coveted aphrodisiac as a prize, I guess they'd just dig in and give it a try, figuring it's just one of their sadistic captain's shticks. Ah, but then the interplay between Kirk and Spock is wonderful. Since Kirk can't write, and Spock professes not to know about love, they'll write the story together. While I loved the inching-closer that followed, we never got to see what their joined literary efforts would produce, not even little snippets of it, and I was expecting to be shown this. They do spend time together, but keep getting distracted, not getting around to the story contest. There's an amusing little "human" foible that I quite enjoyed. They talk about doing research for the story. Kirk's been jerking off for his research, while Spock suggests that reading romances would be more appropriate. When Kirk says, why don't you fuck Chapel and I'll watch, Spock gets to tell his captain he's homosexual. I love it when Kirk freaks out and gets insulting, calls Spock a fag and all; and Spock gives him the what-for, a haughty lecture on Kirk's parochial attitude. In addition, Spock says, I am not after your ass. What's so amusing is how Kirk then resents Spock not wanting his ass! He starts obsessing about this. What, he wants to know, he's not a hot enough babe? This, of course, isn't only amusing, but a commentary on straight man's attitude toward gay men (to just generalize, for now) (and it can be the same with women). The straight guy says, Yo, (burp), fuckin' faggot better not get anywhere near me! The gay says, Don't flatter yourself, honey. Then the straight guy's pissed that the faggot doesn't think he's attractive. That was a bit of gratuitous humor or biting social sarcasm, or supposed to be, whatever.
Anyway, then the talk between Kirk and Spock gets real, about Spock feeling that Kirk, as the captain, is off limits to him; and also that their minds would join if they were to get intimate. But Kirk knows what he wants, and a hot sex scene follows, and then a lovely, warm ending.[2]

The best part—Spock tells Kirk that he was the first human—besides his mother, to pronounce his name. Spock makes him a rare steak for dinner! Now that’s love! [3]
