The Chronicles of Amber is a series of fantasy novels by Roger Zelazny. The main series is ten books long, but is further split into two, five-novel long story arcs, published from 1970-1978 and 1985-1991. There are many short stories that take place in the same canon, as well as an unfinished prequel series authorized by the Zelazny Estate and written by John Gregory Betancourt in the early 2000s. Due to the wishes of Zelazny in the time before his death, there have been almost no attempts to write any sort of continuation to the series, a stance upheld and supported by many close acquaintances and friends of his including George R. R. Martin, Neil Gaiman, and Walter Jon Williams.
The first book of the series, Nine Princes in Amber, was first published in 1970. The DOS game under the same name (Nine Princes in Amber) was published in 1985. The role-playing game, Amber Diceless Roleplaying Game, was published in 1991. It is often abbreviated as ADRPG.
Canon
The Amber stories take place a multiverse derived from two magical worlds that are polar opposites, Amber and Chaos, whose existence has generated innumerable alternative worlds (Shadows) that lie between them. The protagonist of the first story arc, Corwin, is initially amnesiac and only gradually regains his memories of being a prince of Amber, with all its ever-shifting dynastic intrigues. Members of the royal family of Amber can travel the Shadows after walking the Pattern from which derives the very existence of Amber. The second, sequential story arc focuses on Corwin's son Merlin.
