Alvin and the Chipmunks is a media franchise surrounding the three singing chipmunks Alvin, Simon, and Theodore, and their adoptive father David Seville.
The characters were invented for the 1958 novelty Christmas record "The Chipmunk Song", which used sped-up vocal recordings to create high-pitch chipmunk voices. Over the years, the Chipmunks have released numerous official covers of popular songs, leading also to pitched-up fan edits of songs known as "Chipmunk Versions" (similar to but usually more extreme than nightcore edits).
