Alternate universe, or alt uni, within the context of speculative evolution, refers to any speculative evolution project which takes place in a different universe from our own. This encompasses all speculative evolution within the fantasy and science fantasy genres regardless of any other content; some fandom spec; and spec which explores life within alternate physics. It does not include alternate timelines, except where the point of divergence is the introduction of magic.
Despite sharing a name with the alternate universe known to most fandom, alt uni is not usually abbreviated as AU.
