Allura Lives is a SFW full-color Princess Allura zine in the Voltron: Legendary Defender fandom. It contains fix-it fanart and fanfiction. They raised $600.00 for Gyrl Wonder[1].
About
Allura Lives is a fanzine centering around fixing Allura’s tragic ending in Voltron: Legendary Defender. We will bring her back to life in this special compilation of fan-created fix-its to give her the happy ending she deserves.
Allura was reimagined as a woman of color in the Voltron franchise for the first time with Voltron: Legendary Defender. She was an inspiration to many girls of all ages who saw themselves in this beautiful, powerful, dark skinned princess. Her death at the end of the series was devastating, not only because it undermined valuable messages of Voltron—that we are stronger together, and the importance of found families—but once again, after losing so much, a dark skinned woman was needlessly denied a happy ending by enduring further suffering and ultimately sacrificing her own life. This is too painfully close to reality for black women who are dying at disproportionate rates in the US due to police brutality, hate crimes, poverty, and insufficient medical care. It also prevents young black girls from being able to see themselves as the survivors of their own stories.
We hope this collection of uplifting works by her fans will help subvert this harmful narrative and restore the happy ending for our princess Allura.
Charity
All profits will go to Gyrl Wonder.
We chose this nonprofit because it directly benefits young girls and women of color, primarily black girls, to empower them through mentorship, and helps them fulfill life goals by focusing on five pillars: self-care, self-esteem, empowerment (supporting and uplifting each other), development (paths toward goals), and service (community). We feel this is reflective of Allura’s character and honors her leadership, compassion, and strength.
