All Critters Great and Small is a Jim/Blair AU story by Romslinger. It was written as a gift to Janet for donating a winning bid in the Moonridge Charity Auction. It was originally posted to mymongoose and to 852 Prospect, which was later imported to AO3.

I just re-read All Critters Great and Small by Romslinger, Wow, what a lovely feelgood story. It's an alternative meeting AU (slash), and just flows so beautifully. Blair is a veterinarian, hiding out from his past in a small town. Jim is an ex-cop bedevilled by his senses, who is just passing through.... or is he? The plot thickens, and the relationship takes off and... I'll stop there, because I don't want to spoil the plot![1]
In this AU, Jim is on leave from MC (due to his rampaging senses, natch) and is working as a PI. His latest case? To track down one Blair Sandburg, who changed his name and went into hiding seven years ago. Jim gets a lead and heads off into the countryside, where he bumps into Dr. Blair Sanborn, a blue-eyed vet with long curly brown hair. Heh. Romslinger is excellent with AUs, but few of them have the sweetness of All Critters Great and Small. The small, mundane tasks of a small-town vet and the drifter that Jim claims to be weave together to create a delicate, almost fairy tale like atmosphere that is sure to brighten your day.[2]– jane_elliot at epic-recs
I love long AU's! This fic may be AU but the characters are still themselves and the plot is interesting with just enough turns to keep you reading. Romslinger does a great job building a friendship between Blair and Jim so the slash part is still believable. And the story is long, 91 pages printed out, and worth every drop of ink. And for those that are slash wary - I would consider this light slash. The romance/sex doesn't really hit until later on in the story and the sex scenes are in no way explicit.[3]– nadadie
