Reactions and Reviews
Caroline Alert's "Alchemy Series" hooked me onto this fandom back in 2000. In retrospect, I have to admit that the percentage of angst, misunderstandings, drama and clichés is a bit overproportional, plus readers who loathe it when RayK's speech is written in dialect might not enjoy the stories very much, but aside from that, it is very obvious that this series was a labor of love. Despite the fact that Fraser and RayK's relationship is the focal point of "Alchemy", the supporting characters, most of all Ray Vecchio and Francesca, get also a chance to shine. It takes a bit getting used to, but the constant change of POV with each new section works very well for this novel. Fraser and Vecchio's friendship doesn't get neglected and due to the details of Vecchio's undercover assignment made up by the author, his knee-jerk reaction to his best friend being gay makes sense and does not read as character-bashing. Highly addictive and unputdownable. [2]
Alchemy was transmuting baser metals into gold and finding an elixir of life. It required great sacrifices, but promised immense rewards to those who did not give up. Rather like the process of finding love in the real world....The process for Ray and Benton is long and arduous. These series is extremely long, but is completely enjoyable. [3]
The course of love never runs smoothly, especially in fanfic. Caroline has written a gripping set of BF/SRK stories that not only puts the guys through the emotional wringer, but takes the reader right along with them.[4]
