Alan Wake is a video game by Remedy Entertainment. It has had a small, yet dedicated fandom since 2010. Remedy's other games Control and Max Payne share a world with the one in Alan Wake. This may be called the Remedyverse by fans.

Canon

There are two full length games in the Alan Wake series, plus DLC and the smaller download only game, 'Alan Wake: American Nightmares'.

In the first game, Alan and his wife, Alice, are on vacation in Bright Falls when Alice goes missing. Convinced that Supernatural elements are at play, Alan desperately tries to find his wife and unravel the mysteries of Bright Falls and the dark presence that seems to exist there. The use of light against darkness is a key theme throughout the game.

Throughout the first game, the player is often left unsure whether what they're seeing through Alan is real or not and, arguably, that uncertainty doesn't even completely go away with the game's ending.

Fandom

Alan Wake received generally favourable reviews from fans and critics. The fandom has recently seen a revival with the release of Alan Wake 2 and places like the Alan Wake subreddit and discussions boards for video games have seen a spike in activity with the release.

On Archive of Our Own the fandom is much smaller, with 296 works as of December 2023. Gen and M/M seem to be equally popular, with the largest pairing being Mr. Scratch/Alan Wake.
