A wonderfully sweet story, Kirk and Spock have been bonded for many years. They are now professors at a University on a low gravity planet in deference to Kirk’s physical needs as he ages. Nice short back-story to explain why Kirk would give up the swashbuckling life to settle down in this role and Spock’s part in his decision.
A new professor/neighbor moves into his apartment building and the story is seen mainly through the eyes of a new neighbor when Kirk befriends her two small boys. The mother is intrigued by Kirk but has no clue about his identity. Spock is away on a trip to a seminar and is hurt on the way back. The writing is poignant and sweet and I really enjoy seeing Kirk through someone else’s viewpoint. And I enjoy the graceful portrayal of an aging Kirk. My only complaint is the story ends abruptly when Spock returns. [1]

4/5: I kept putting this one off, but when I eventually got around to reading it it turned out to be very good and I enjoyed it quite a bit. It's a little sad at parts, but it's mostly calm and relaxing. This should technically be listed as AU, since it's old and retired Kirk, but as this story was written before Generations came out, I decided not to tag it as such. [2]
