Afterthoughts is a Star Trek: TOS story by Martin Sherrif.

It was published in Queen Grope.

Summary

It takes place directly after Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

Kirk lays on his bed in his quarters, and is glad that it is now a bigger bed, as it's better for having sex in.

He thinks about Spock who, in the movie, returned unexpectedly. He had left Kirk after becoming freaked out by their sexually physical relationship. Kirk decides to let Spock come to his own decisions.

Then Kirk hears a knock at his door, and there is Spock: "The dark eyes studied him watchfully, unsure of their welcome.

Spock said, 'May I... come in'?

Excerpts

No! He shouldn't have started to think about it. There hadn't been time to time to think since Spock reappeared so unexpectedly, no time to remember the old hurts and fear new ones. Spock! Older, leaner, more pragmatic than ever... the last person he'd expected to walk out onto the bridge just when he'd needed him so.

It had hurt when he'd gone, hurt like hell, but he'd understood, had seen how their relationship was tearing him apart. God knew he'd never meant to take him in his arms that night, hadn't even been thinking of it, but the feelings that had flickered and shimmered between them for so long, unspoken, unperceived, had suddenly, irresistibly overflowed; built up like storm water behind a dam they'd been released in a tempestual, rushing torrent of needs and clinging... building towards the final, cataclysmic release...

He groaned and rolled onto his stomach. What a night that had been, what a perfect, glorious, unforgettable night; murmuring such sweet foolishness to each other as the hours crept by; unwilling to sleep, to miss a second of the brief time they could spend together; laughing at their own profound need, their vulnerable loneliness even as they tried to soothe the old, deep hurts away. He should have known it was too good to last, that such perfection could never be his to keep.

Single-sex pairings were not that uncommon in Starfleet. There may have been a few raised eyebrows over the unlikely combination, disbelief that Tomcat Kirk had been caught at last, but it would have been a nine-days wonder, soon accepted... by Humans.

To a Vulcan though, it was as taboo as to a Victorian; an illogical, disgusting emotion to be suppressed, controlled and rigidly forbidden. Their custom of childhood bonding ensured that the male would turn to the female in the madness of pon farr and the race would be continued. But Spock's bonding had been broken and his treacherous, emotional Human half had been let loose to seek its own needs, find its perfect partner.
