Academy Aftermath is a Kirk/Spock story by Karin Porter.

It was published in the print zine Scattered Stars #8.

Summary

"While taking a summer course, Cadet Kirk meets upperclassman Spock and they spend the summer building a close friendship, one that is reawakened when they end up together on the Enterprise."

Reactions and Reviews

A very nicely done A/U story of a 19 year old (yum!) Kirk at the Academy who one day finds a chess partner via on-line the computer. The strangers decide to meet in person the next day.

A very nice touch of Kirk listening to a "Hornblower booktape" and just because I enjoy these—a cute typo of "astrophysics tomb" for "tome". There's a neat scene as Kirk and Spock eat lunch together. I loved Kirk ordering a peanut butter sandwich instead of a hamburger to spare Spock's feelings. Lots of good youthful verve and realism comes through their dialogue—not an easy thing to capture. A beautiful moment occurs as they stand on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Kirk talks about sailing the stars. Really lovely— "You feel it too, don't you? Something is calling me, calling us. Someday we'll sail the stars until we find it." I just loved the small moments like Kirk sneaking up behind Spock and covering his eyes and saying "Guess who?" So adorable! Spock explains he's a "touch telepath" and he'd know who! Time passes and they are in command of the Enterprise. However, such a long passage of time with many events shown on only a few lines presents a difficulty for the reader. Even though I understand the author wants to get to the "good stuff" with K & S (so do I!) we still need some more scenes to fill in the time. I really enjoyed the idea of the pre-reform stories that Spock wrote for Kirk. I would have enjoyed it even more if just one of them were shown. Another mention of the Gorn! Oh boy! Kirk's fighting with that ol' pesky Gorn and Spock gets all stirred up. I love it! Kirk reads some of Spock's warrior stories and reflects on how he likes "the romantic by-play, even though the encounters were not at all explicit". Hey! He's reading some pre-K/S gen zines! The warrior bond stories lead to more (another reason why we should have seen them) and K & S make love. A unique thing occurs in their lovemaking—Spock traces Kirk's aura with his hands. Really neat. There's lots of wonderful emotional feeling between them.

I thoroughly enjoyed ACADEMY AFTERMATH— definitely one to remember. [1]
