Abigail Thorn, also known as Philosophy Tube, is a YouTuber, playwright, and actress.
Career
Acting
Thorn has been a professional actor since 2018. She has performed as a voice actor and onscreen in series such as Django, and Identiteaze. Since early 2021, she has performed as Abigail Thorn. Prior to her transition and coming out, Thorn performed under a different name.
She voiced Nocturne in Baldur's Gate III, and has appeared in both The Acolyte and House of the Dragon.
Philosophy Tube
Since 2013, Thorn has written, produced and performed in videos on her YouTube channel, Philosophy Tube. The channel was created in response to the tripling of tuition fees for British universities, and was intended to deliver her philosophy degree to those who could not afford to attend university because of this. Originally simple in presentation, Thorn's videos have become more theatrical, and have included discussions of topics such as Islamophobia, Transness and the NHS, and social constructs.
In 2019, Thorn raised over £100,000 for British charity, Samaritans, by hosting a five-day livestream where she read from the Complete Works of Shakespeare.[1]
Kill James Bond
In February 2021, Thorn started a comedy, non-fiction podcast, called Kill James Bond. Along with fellow trans cohosts, Alice Caldwell-Kelly and Devon (no last name), they review and analyse the James Bond films "in an attempt to give 007 the socialist, feminist upcoming he so richly deserves".[2]
In April 2022, they caught up to and killed James Bond in a sold-out liveshow, reviewing No Time To Die.[3] At that event, Thorn discussed her experiences as a trans woman in relation to the character of James Bond, and what he has meant to her throughout her life.
Since then, they have reviewed other spy films, as well as more broadly films featuring the theme of masculinity. In April 2023, the three hosted three liveshows, where they reviewed the Austin Powers films.
Writing
In late 2022, Thorn wrote and performed in a play called The Prince. Staged at the Southwark Playhouse in London, the play centred trans narratives in a Shakespearean multiverse, generally to positive reviews.[4]
