Abigail 'Abbey' Bartlet was the First Lady on The West Wing, played by Stockard Channing.
Background
Abbey Bartlet is married to Jed Bartlet, they have three children: Elizabeth, Ellie and Zoey. We hear relatively little about her past, except that she met Jed Bartlet while they were in college and she's a world-renowned surgeon having obtained her MD at Harvard. She is also a devout Catholic, like her husband.
Career
World renowned Thoracic surgeon. Teaches at Harvard. Halfway through the series she loses her medical license for secretly treating her husband's MS, a huge blow.
As First Lady, she advocates for women's rights and is very political in the first term. In her husband's second term, she's lost her medical license and become bitter about the personal cost the presidency has taken on them, resulting in a reluctant taking up of a more traditional role as First Lady.
Personality
A fierce Feminist, she advocates for women's rights around the world in her role as First Lady. Like her husband, she is political, which causes trouble for the White House as she is not the model First Lady.
