Reactions and Reviews
1995
Unabashedly, (and famously) one of my favorite scenarios—Spock is the master and Kirk is the love slave. From an alternate universe, the slave Kirk transposes himself with our Kirk. After a while, he regrets it which gives this story a slightly different turn. One of the nice touches are subterranean hot springs on Vulcan. I enjoyed an absolutely lovely scene (ignoring the punctuation and grammar) where Lord Spock tells Kirk why he wants to make love: "To dream of what can be Captain, James, to take what you can have now, to say good-bye...." [1]
Cyd Bascom's a/u story - at 23-1/2 pages - is too short. She needs to develop more the relationship and characters of the Spock and Kirk pair in G'Hanar. I want to know more about this Fhazin Kirk and his Lord Spock.Overall, this excellent story presents two pairs of our favorite duo, with Kirk being both the one most changed between the universes and the one who changes universes. The switches between universes/characters are never confusing, and this is a compliment to the writer.
The writing is good. I assume Cyd wrote the beginning poem fragment as it is not familiar. Both the beginning and ending paragraphs are nicely presented, the first immediately plunging us into the hot ancient G'Hanar caverns.
It's a great story and a proper beginning to SS7.[2]
