A League of Their Own is a TV series centred around baseball, and the women who pursue it. The show is known in fandom for its queerness, both in its storylines and its cast of characters.

Canon

Film -- 1992 TV Series -- 2022

Most of the fandom content on Tumblr and AO3 seems to be about the TV Series.

The TV series is inspired by the 1992 film and there are references and call-backs to the film, including the famous, "There's no crying in baseball" line. However, it follows a very different story-line, focusing on the perspectives and stories of dual protagonists Max Chapman and Carson Shaw. The series focuses primarily on story-lines within the LGBT and Black communities of the 1940s in America, not avoiding the period-typical attitudes, racism, and homophobia of the time at, but also making sure to include the joy within those communities and not just the bigotry faced.

Cancellation

Amidst the growing number of sapphic shows cancelled in the 2020s, A League of their Own has the dubious honour of being one that was technically cancelled twice!

After airing in August 2022, fans held out hope for information of a renewal given the positive response received. However, 8 months later, in April 2023, Amazon announced that while there would be a second series, it would only be four episodes long and it would be the final season[1]. While disappointed, fans continues to push for more with a #MoreThanFour campaign on social media and remaining optimistic that Abbi Jacobson and Will Graham would be able to do the show justice even in just four episodes.

However, in August 2023, Amazon reversed this decision and released a statement confirming that they would be cancelling the show immediately and blamed the WGA and SGA-AFTRA strikes[2], widely seen as both a weak excuse and one of many attempts being made by various companies to undermine public support for the strikes.

In light of the news about Amazon retroactively canceling the already insultingly short 4 episode ALOTO season 2, it's important to remember they are doing this 1. Cause they never wanted to make it in the first place. And 2. Because they want to sway public opinion against the strikes in their favor. DO NOT GIVE IN!

Amazon did not tell Abbi Jacobson or Will Graham about the reversed decision ahead of time, so they both learnt about it at the same time as the fans when the news broke[3].
