Reactions and Reviews
1989
The very first paragraph pulled me in. As Spock described how the populace made way for him in the street, I was pleased by the awe he put down to etiquette. A sensitive, involving story written with depth and yet economy. The images were clear and moving, and I greatly appreciated seeing this piece of Jim's past through the eyes (and painting) of a lover from his past, and Spock. Though the story was short, it felt as though I'd read a full novella because there was so much packed into it. Spock's love for Jim was expressed so well through his reactions to the painting. One of my favorite lines: "..., to feel the pull of Kirk's being like an anchor to which his own soul was now safely moored." I especially love stories, like this one, that give me a warm, cozy feeling of fulfillment that also lasts after reading. [1]
1996
Kirk and Spock are an item as the story opens and Spock is walking in downtown San Francisco thinking about his love. "Jim. He repeated the name once more allowing the new bond between them to open just enough for him to be aware of his mate's presence at the other end, to feel the pull of Kirk's being like an anchor to which his own soul was now safely moored." Isn't that lovely?
Spock goes into a small art gallery and finds a portrait of a nude young man. Guess who that nude young man is? The mystery of the painting unfolds in this lovely and gentle story. [2]
