Reactions and Reviews

In the original script for Star Trek 4, Saavik was pregnant with Spock’s child as a result of his first pon farr on Genesis. Of course as we all know, by the time the movie had made it to the screen, that concept was left on the cutting room floor, if it was filmed at all. Still, it certainly was something that was possible, although I really haven’t read too much about such a scenario in the world of K/S. This story is one of the few to tackle that issue and the author does so brilliantly.

Here, Kirk is in his quarters on Enterprise B, exceedingly happy and grateful for his first officer’s (and lover’s) presence in the quarters just next door. But on top of that relief and happiness is tremendous guilt. For he has come to the realization that if he could do the same thing all over again with the same results, he would do so without hesitation, even though it would mean the death of his only son. How he could possibly hold the life of Spock in more esteem over the life of his only son is a question he can find no answer for. But he has little time to ponder it when Spock comes to him with his own sense of guilt and betrayal. The Vulcan has just discovered that Saavik has given birth to a son, his son, a result of their coupling on Genesis. That very real, undeniable evidence of his unfaithfulness to his bondmate, one Captain James T. Kirk, is almost too much to bear and he is certain Kirk will never forgive him for that transgression. Yet he underestimates his bondmate, for even though Kirk cannot forgive himself for David’s death, he is still able to welcome this new life.

I have to commend this author for taking on a subject which could be a difficult one to tackle because it leaves a lot of unanswered questions. Is Spock going to feel obligated to go back to Vulcan to raise his child with Saavik? If so, what about his future with Jim? Could Jim give up the Enterprise to be with Spock and his new family? How would Spock feel about that? And if they do stay on the Enterprise, is Spock going to feel guilty about being an absent father? Especially These questions remain unanswered even in the author’s own story. Not that one can blame her, for there really are no easy answers. Maybe that’s why there aren’t a lot of stories out there that deal with this concept. Maybe we don’t want Kirk or Spock to have to make those kinds of choices. Maybe, just maybe, it’s because we don’t want to tarnish that perfect little world that is called K/S. [1]
