The Favors Series

From the Editorial

Two years ago, when "Stingray" was cancelled, we decided that we were unwilling to let a good character die. We put out the call for stories and ended up with more than we could print in a single volume. Thus "Small Favors" was born. A year later, we put out the call again, and the results are before you now. Gentle Reader.

What was it about this show, "Stingray", that made two otherwise semi-normal "30-something" women willing to subject themselves to sleepless nights, H hair-pulling aggravation, computer elbow, and CRT eye fatigue? "Stingray" wasn't a buddy show. The nearest thing to a sidekick for Ray was a gray-haired police captain named Riskin. So it wasn't our usual love for buddy shows that drew us to "Stingray".

It wasn't a formula show. Sure, it had a car and a guy who went around asking for favors. But then again, you never knew from one week to the next what kind of ^ show you were watching. One week would have wacky comedy like "Caper", a shipboard exercise in the Peter Principle, or "Cry Wolf", about a zonked-out actor targeted by the Japanese Yakuza and the Mob. The next week you would find yourself watching a science-fiction thriller with an ecological message called "Playback". Another week, and you'd see a real gut-wrencher about guilt and grief called "The First Time is Forever". Then the producers would sneak up on you with a spiritual journey about respect for other cultures and the land, called "The Neniwa". No, "Stingray" was definitely not a formula show.

The thing that held it all together wasn't the car or the premise; it was the consistently excellent performances of Nick Mancuso as the title character. Mr. Mancuso is a member of a very rare and vanishing breed: a leading man who is also a character actor. Articles about him often use the word "chameleon" to describe his almost eerie talent for changing from one character into another. It's an appropriate description.
