Yuma Tsukumo/III, also known as Aztecshipping, is the pairing between Yuma Tsukumo and III (Real name: Michael Arclight) from Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal. As of December 2024, it has 38 works on Ao3.[1]

Canon

Yuma and III are initially in opposing positions. III, one of the three sons of Tron, is initially focused on helping his family with their revenge scheme in the hopes that they'll go back to how they used to be after the revenge is done. He soon starts to warm up to Yuma upon seeing his determination to never give up, but suffers a breakdown on meeting Yuma's family that ultimately results in III trying to mentally break Yuma in a duel out of jealousy and pain. However, the two end up working together to avert a near apocalypse brought on by the card Final Prophecy, which is followed by III claiming that Yuma is his 'first friend' and entrusting him to save his family, voluntarily handing over his Number cards to Yuma, and then returning home to fall into a coma.

III returns during the second half of Zexal primarily as a bodyguard to Yuma, choosing to stick close to him and even sleeping over at Yuma's house to help protect him in the wake of Astral's seeming death. His reintroduction to the plot has III claim that he'll act as Yuma's 'sword and shield', followed by Yuma choosing to give III's Number cards back to him in a show of trust. Later, during the climax of the show, III voluntarily sacrifices himself to stall the Barians long enough to let Yuma get away, using his final words to claim he'll be by Yuma's side in spirit before dying.

III declares his intention to protect Yuma by acting as his 'sword and shield'.

III is generally shown to have a deep devotion to aiding and protecting Yuma even at cost to himself after he stops being an antagonist, which is particularly notable since the only other people III shows that level of loyalty to are his own family. Yuma, in turn, is quick to trust III after his reintroduction to the plot, and is shown to be deeply distraught when III sacrifices himself to stall the Barians.

Ship Name

Aztecshipping likely comes from both character's connections to history: Yuma's parents were explorers who brought home numerous ancient artifacts while III has a notable interest in ancient history. Additionally, III's favourite card is stated to be Chronomaly Aztec Mask Golem.
