your blue-eyed boys is a series of novel-length and one-shots post-Captain America: The Winter Soldier fanfiction by Feather, detailing Bucky's trauma recovery and his relationship with Steve. It is a Bucky/Steve fic with minor/background Betty/Bruce and Pepper/Tony.

sallysparrow017 did a podfics of the series.

Summary

Steve has no plan. Not because he hadn't tried to make one. He'd tried to make lots of plans. Plan, adapt, plan again, tried to think of every contingency.
And then he'd thrown them away, because there wasn't much point. What could you plan for? He couldn't guess the possible contingencies, the situations, the potentials. :And he sure as sure hadn't figured on what's happened now, on coming back to his place and finding Bucky here. He hadn't even hoped for that.
He hadn't realized he could.

Series

  • hidden far away (prologue)

It’s a room with a bare floor, one window. It’s got six or seven flats of water stacked in one corner, beside flats of canned stuff like soup. No sign of any way to heat them. A little line of tooth-brush-soap-baking-soda in a plastic container. Steve picks up the baking soda and can’t decide whether he should think it’s a hopeful sign. It’s what they used to use, but who knows?

  • your blue-eyed boys (1: someone's bound to get burned)

In all of his life - including not only the stuff people would expect, like storming the HYDRA factory alone or crashing the Valkyrie, but also being a kid and so sick he could literally hear his mother praying through tears a few feet over, and the days and nights it was him praying and her gasping for breath that eventually left her - In all that, through all that, this is the first time Steve's hands have actually shaken so badly he has to stop and sit and make himself calm down

  • your blue-eyed boys (2: daylight could be so violent)

"Other than to cut me up, beat me, fight me or repair me, Steve," Bucky says, when Steve finally looks back at him, "the last person to touch me was you."

  • you&i'll be safe and sound (epilogue)

Author's Notes

This series should be treated as one story. The story uses only MCU canon up to Captain America: The Winter Soldier and extrapolates only from stuff actually in the films, plus my previous series. This series is NOT compliant with anything after CA:TWS, with individual details or new characters added at my whim.

Reactions & Comments

It’s my birthday, and in honor of that today’s rec is my favorite Steve and Bucky story.

I can’t even begin to describe why I love this so much, I kind of just want to go and tell everyone to just trust me and read it. (I get it’s a lot, i mean this one is 120k words, and then there are the sequel/prequel/parallel series that are an additional 480k words [yes, really!], but because it’s all so good the only problem is trying to remember to sleep…)

Anyway, in short, I love the characterizations here, for both the protagonists and the supporting cast, and no one gets a short stick and everyone gets to be a real person, and not just prop to fuel the story on, it is all just so well done.

Also this is possibly the most meticulously realistic about the trauma recovery, the ups and downs, and it’s just so satisfying to see the progress that happens with Bucky, but also Steve’s journey parallel to it, and them coming closer and closer together. And it manages to be both heartrending and hopeful at the same time.

There are also just so many delightful things about it. The kitten. The accidental adoptive niece. Bucky’s overdeveloped care-taking instinct. Steve renovating stuff. Just read it and find out what else.[1]

Okay, so I don’t rec fic on here very often, but this …

I really don’t know how better to rec this than to say that this is really THE definitive post-Winter Soldier recovery fic. There is lots of great fic in this fandom, but this one is, IMHO, the best one out there. It is also unbelievably grim in places and triggery for probably just about everything (depression, self-harm, food/eating issues … basically every common trigger I can think of except for rape is in this one). This is a very wrenching, disturbing story. But it’s filled to the brim with love and h/c and cuddling and friendship and team feelings and characters being selfless and AMAZING.

(It is also, no lie, the kind of story that makes you go out into the world wanting to be a better person. This story gave me ideas for dealing with family members who are going through trauma – I mean, obviously not trauma on the level of what’s happening in this story, but it made me quietly determine to be more patient and supportive. There’s a bit in the story that if you’re willing to take a bullet for someone, you should also be willing to accept some hurt feelings, and obviously things can often be more complicated – which is also acknowledged in-text – but that really resonated with me. As well as just, generally, the characters being self-aware and giving and flawed and human and beautiful.)

As you can probably tell I still have many feelings about this.

The best thing I can compare this to, as far as fic I’ve loved in other fandoms, is The Hard Prayer by Rheanna (SGA, John/Rodney). I loved this story for similar reasons to why I loved that one. If you liked that one, you might like this (and vice versa).[2]

i feel like i talk about this one a lot but this one is like. THE FIC. that drug me into fandom and made me want to stay up all night voraciously reading. the characterization and the depth of care that the author brings to two of my favorite characters is just. perfection. you can tell when an author just LOVES and GETS characters in the same way you do, and feather's love for steve and bucky and so many of my fave marvel characters is present in every line (NAT!!). i come back to this one a lot. steve's devotion to bucky in this 'verse, to be whatever he needs, to never give up on him, to doing anything in his power to make his life a little easier, the way that the two of them wrestle with bucky's trauma, is incredible and is something that i come back to and think about and challenge myself about. i love fics that make me think and make me question things and help me process some of my own shit. i love it.[3]
