Author's Intro
Introduction: Some years ago, I began writing a series of background stories for the captain character of my Alliance series. Part of that background included a five-year mission with Captain Christopher Pike on the Enterprise. To make a long story short, I sort of got stuck on the Enterprise. I ended up taking a piece of Vonda McIntyre's novel *Enterprise* (Pause for groans from novel haters.) and building from Pike's end. The result was a booklength project called "Yesterday's Heroes," a series of short stories about each member of crew of "The Cage". A couple were dropped, some of my own were added, along with three from the TOS cast we all know and love. The original idea was to do one story about Pike's crew, one about Kirk and McCoy, and then a third which explains the hand-off from Pike to Kirk. Funny how things don't work out. That concept is now three booklength projects, and the section about Kirk alone is a three parter. I'm just a writing fool. Originally, I planned to release all of this as a series of fan novels. I still may. However, after all this time, I have to dust this story off and finally show it to an audience.[1]
Reactions and Reviews
"Yesterday's Heroes"--what can I say except that I love action/adventure--a genre that opens itself to not only the danger of the week, but also to serious characterization as the crew struggles to overcome the latest crises. JWinter depicted the early crew beautifully, showing us the Enterprise sans Kirk, with the heroic captain who began the ship's legend. Furthermore, J presented his novel-length story in different chapters that were capable of standing alone as separate stories or in a collection with a common thread (a la Ray Bradbury's "The Martian Chronicles")--a superior method of presentation.[2]
Yesterday's Heroes, by James Winter, is a terrific series taking place aboard Chris Pike's Enterprise. Winter has plenty of talent and it shows. This collection of short stories are capable of standing alone individually or together. I came to know Chris Pike through James' stories. Winter has taken us far beyond the little bit we saw of him in the tv series and given us an excellent action-adventure series.[3]
