Xanxus is a character from Katekyo Hitman Reborn.

Canon

Xanxus is a supporting character in Katekyo Hitman Reborn who serves as an antagonist during the Varia Arc but is later a grudging ally to the protagonists. He is the adopted son of Timoteo, the Ninth head of the Vongola mafia. He was raised by his mother until he developed Wrath flames and his mother became convinced that he was Timoteo's son. Timoteo adopted him and agreed that he was his child, although he had never met Xanxus's mother before. Xanxus eventually assumed leadership of the Varia, the Vongola's assassination squad. However, because he was not actually related to Timoteo, he would not be able to become the next leader of the Vongola. When he found out about his real heritage and Timoteo's role in keeping it from him, he became enraged and led the Varia in an uprising against Timoteo and the Vongola, which is later referred to as "The Cradle Affair." He was defeated by Timoteo, who was prepared to kill him, until Sawada Iemitsu argued against it. Timoteo ultimately decided to use the Zero Point Breakthrough: First Edition technique to freeze him and seal his flames. He remained frozen for eight years. Upon being released, he kidnapped Timoteo and challenged Sawada Tsunayoshi for his right to be Vongola Decimo. He failed to defeat Tsuna and has since harbored a grudge against his future boss.[1]

Xanxus is loud, ill-tempered, violent, and rude. He is usually unconcerned when his subordinates die, and is prone to yelling at them over small mistakes and throwing objects at them. That said, while Xanxus hates both the present Vongola head and the current heir, he is extremely loyal to the family as a whole and particularly to the Varia.

Common Pairings

Fanon and Common Tropes in Fanworks

  • It is popular to characterize Xanxus as being more caring towards his subordinates than he is shown to be in canon. Some fics characterize him as a better boss than Timoteo (or sometimes even a better boss than Tsuna). Many people attempt to explain why his subordinates are so fiercely loyal given the treatment of them we see, such as by explaining it as a smokescreen or a result of (non-canonical) Zero Point Breakthrough: First Edition side effects.
  • Xanxus being more protective toward Tsuna, sometimes refusing to fight a kid once he realizes who his opponent is or even actively working to protect him from other members of the mafia and their plans.
  • Xanxus's relationships with his late adopted brothers are never expanded on in canon; some fans speculate that he was actually quite close to them, while others postulate that he was mistreated by them due to his mother being a poor woman with no particular connection to the mafia.
  • Canonically, Xanxus was looked down on to some extent due to his mother's background and later due to having been adopted; some fans speculate that this treatment was more common or severe than it is in canon.
