Xanga was a blogging/social media site that hosted weblogs, photoblogs and social networking profiles.[1] In September 2013, the Xanga Team announced they were working to make the archives of old 2 million Xanga blogs available for free download.[3]

Currently, when accessing a blog that has not been migrated to Xanga 2.0, the following message appears:

We aren't showing any blog archives saved for this page. Read below for details.

Details on this page
We have saved blog archives for sites that match any of the following criteria:

  • The member has signed into the site in the past 5 years, and has at least three subscribers
  • The member has signed into the site in the past year, and has at least ten blogs overall

If you're seeing this message, it looks like you weren't in any of these categories. We hope that you were able to download your free archives sometime over the past few months! Please email us at [email protected] if you have any questions.[4]

Core features

Xanga members received a "Xanga Site", a website containing a weblog, photoblog, videoblog, audioblog, "Pulse" (mini-blog), and social networking profile. Members could also make or join blogrings (groups).

Weblog

Xanga first added weblogs to Xanga Sites on November 5, 2000. Comments were added soon after, on December 8, 2000, along with "eProps", which a user could give to another user's entry to show they enjoyed it.

History

Xanga began in 1999 as a site for sharing book and music reviews. It became public in 2000, following a series of e-mail recruitment methods via GeoCities.[5]

Over the next few years, Xanga underwent several formatting changes. Featured Content was divided in 2002,[6] being replaced by Premium and Classic views.[7] Eventually, new profile features such as friends, "nudges", and chat forums that resemble Facebook were added, and video and audio capability were added in 2006.[8]

In 2013, Xanga was under threat of shutting down unless it raised $60k by mid-July (for "Xanga 2.0").[9] Failing to reach that goal, Xanga became an un-navigatable page in late 2013.

Questions about the money raised and what it would be used for were asked in August 2013 by tonyscotland2013 in a blog post.[10] Hours later, the comments were closed on the post.[10]

In September of that same year, The Xanga Team blog published a step-by-step guide about Xanga 2.0 and how it was possible for all users to access their old blogs.[11] However, users complain about having difficulties in the process, especially those with free accounts. Complaints of content misappropriation and favoritism for Premium and Plus users were also made.

Xanga 2.0

The September 2013 post about Xanga 2.0 raised some doubts about the veracity of being able to access its old blogs and content for free:

Welcome to Xanga 2.0!

Welcome to the official launch of Xanga 2.0!

Here's how to get started:

1. SIGNIN

You can sign into your Xanga account right here:

You can use the same username and password that you're used to, and it should work!

2. CHECK OUT YOUR BLOG

If you are premium or participated in our Xanga 2.0 campaign, your blog should be in the same location! For example, my blog is here: http://john.xanga.com

If your blog appears, you should be able to go to your dashboard and start blogging! :) Your blog should even look similar to your old theme. (If it looks a bit off, let us know here and we'll take a look!) http://help.xanga.com/forum/themes

If your blog doesn't appear (and you are either premium or contributed to our campaign), please let us know in our help forum and we will look into it! http://help.xanga.com/forum/data-migration

3. CHECK OUT YOUR READING PAGE (TO READ POSTS)

Either way, you should be able to check out your Reading page under your dashboard!

It's a great way to find updates from your subs and friends! Speaking of which, we made some name changes related to subs and friends, to help make it a bit simpler and more intuitive... you can read about the name tweaks here!

ps Thanks for your patience everyone... we will find a way to make it up to you!!

pps We are now officially in phase 2 (of four) of the Xanga 2.0 launch!

Phase 1: Data Migration
Phase 2: Site Tuning <---
Phase 3: Feature Prioritization
Phase 4: Building Together

The next month or two of work on Xanga 2.0 is going to be busy, so we wanted to share with everyone a roadmap of how we’re thinking about things... if you're interested, you can read more details about the 4 phases here[11]

Some users felt aggrieved and complained about the team's lack of clarity, impartiality and silence:

I have a normal account, and I can't access my blog or anything. Does that mean its lost?!

I'm confused. As I understand it, as a holder of a "basic account", I can download my archives. Then I can create a WordPress.com site and migrate my stuff there. BUT, I will no longer be a member of the Xanga community. That is I won't have a jip.xanga.com site, but rather a jip.wordpress.com site. Is that right? You've migrated my followers, but once I move to WP.com, they'll no longer know I exist. What am I missing here?

I haven;t been on here in a couple years and I will not pay to become a premium member so does that mean all of my old blogs are lost?!?!? It was 4-5 years worth of stuff? I'm unable to download or get any of that back?

Hi there,

Your blog posts for http://love-easier-said-than-done.xanga.com/ are saved and available for a free download!

You can download them by signing in here: http://xanga.com/wp-login.php

When you have a copy of your blog posts on your own computer, you can do one of two things:

1. Upload your archives to another site that's compatible with your blog archives.

WordPress.com is one such free site... more information on how to import your archives into WP here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/import/import-from-xanga/

2. Upgrade your account to Xanga 2.0, and continue blogging on Xanga. You can use PayPal (can also pay via credit card through this page) to purchase a one-year membership for Xanga 2.0: http://bit.ly/1dcERuj

If you choose this option please forward your Paypal confirmation email along with your username to [email protected], we will get your site upgraded ASAP.

Thanks,

Eugenia at xanga.com

I have tried in vain to access my old blog. No, I was not premium nor a contributor; my account was a free one. Still, I should be allowed to access MY blog, my entries ... MY words, without having to pay.

I clicked the link to download the archives/zip files and there were just two in the zip - two from hundreds. Two from last year.

Can you please release my property to me?

Thank you.

I'm a once in a while blogger. So I come back and now I don't have a clue what's happening. As I undierstand everything is updating. And if you were involved or a paying member, you site is safe. What about everyone else? I understand, if you meet the requirements, you can download your blogs to import elsewhere or here again. Now when I get to my page there is a place I can manage my account. I can choose basic account or shutdown. When I choose basic it gives a warning message that it will delete all my blogs, that I can still browse and comment but I won't be able to access my site. So all of this is to say how in the heck do I get back to blogging?
