Some Excerpts
I got the idea for "The Story" after reading Amy Bloom's short story of the same title. Bloom's story played with the concept of an unreliable narrator and I was taken with the idea of telling a story where everything and/or nothing was true. I also love making up backstory and I knew that the concept I was playing with would give me a lot of space to do that.
The writing process was pretty straightforward. I mean, one can only dress writing up so much, you know? Basically it all boils down to just forcing yourself to sit down and type.
I think I posted 'The Story' to two mailing groups and it went up on my site and Guilty Pleasures.I normally send my stuff out to two, maybe three mailing groups. Talk about it in my journal a little maybe, although, in all honesty, I hate doing that. With e-mail, I can send the story out and then delete it as soon as it shows up in my box so I can pretend I didn't send it out. With my journal, I have to face my shilling until it scrolls off the page.
It's sort of the catch-22 of fanfic--you want feedback, but you don't want to seem like you're begging for it. I still haven't found a graceful way around it.
