WordGirl is an American animated children's show created by Dorothea Gillim. Beginning life as a series of shorts in 2006, it became a full-fledged TV show in 2007, which then lasted for 8 seasons. It has since gained a cult following.
Plot & Characters
The show follows Becky Botsford, a 10-year-old superpowered alien who fights crime under the alias of WordGirl. Among her superpowers is her extensive vocabulary; the show uses this to introduce words to its young audience.
Some other major characters include:
- TJ Botsford: Becky's adoptive brother and a huge fan of her superhero alter ego.
- Violet Heaslip: one of Becky's best friends.
- Todd "Scoops" Ming: an aspiring reporter and friend of Becky.
- Theodore "Tobey" McCallister III: a child prodigy and supervillain.
- Dr. Two-Brains: a former mentor to Becky, now a mad scientist and cheese thief.
Fandom
WordGirl gained a cult following online during the 2020s, largely made up of people who watched the show as children. A great deal of fanart exists for the series, as does fanfiction. There are currently over 450 works in the WordGirl fandom tag on AO3.
The most popular ship in the fandom is Becky/Tobey, with 200 works on AO3.
A fan favorite character is Dr. Two-Brains, as his backstory with WordGirl and transformation into a villain offer ample room for angst and character study.
