Reactions and Reviews

1990

I liked the mature Bodie; a sharp, intelligent Bodie prepared to replace Cowley, indeed, all but demanding the job. And B&D don't get back together too fast (save me from long stories which have them panting in bed by page 2. I like some, um, foreplay, as it were.) But I didn't particularly like the (yet-again_ early destitute Doyle living in a cold water flat, alone and friendless, on a pittance and guilt. Give the man some credit for being resourceful A bum leg wouldn't stop Doyle. [1]

... a short story can also be very satisfying. I love Jenny Parkinson's story... in which Doyle is invalided out of CI5 following a car accident which was Bodie's fault, and eventually is persuaded to go back despite Bodie's vocal disapproval. She says everything that needs to be said but leaves you with masses to think about and fill in for yourself, so that even after you've stopped reading, it stays with you, sometimes for days. [2]

... "Without Prejudice". (Great story, if anyone's in the unlikely position of not having read it yet) Yes, I love that kind of writing, too. The spareness is amazingly evocative. Particularly when, as in "Without Prejudice", the story stops at just the right, tantalising point to prompt one's own musings. In SF, they always used to call this sort of conclusion a 'slingshot ending' - with reference to launching a spaceship by using the slingshot effect of sending it around the sun, thereby gathering the power to hurtle out into the galaxy. Like that term, and think it a really useful way of describing the kind of effect you mention. [3]
