This is another writer I read first because of romance codes (in this case TNG C/Q, P/Q) and I was sure glad I read it. One of the things I look for while reading fanfic is whether or not I can "hear" the actor's voices in the dialogue, and Ariana manages the trick perfectly. Her Picard/Troi story ("With Me In Your Mind") is yet another case of a talented writer making an odd pairing work, and I'm curious to see what she comes up with next (more P/Q hopefully). [1]
'With Me in Your Mind' is a Picard/Troi romance. Once again Ariana demonstrates her amazing ability to sucessfully put an unusual pairing together and make you wonder why you never of thought of it before. But there's more to it than that... Both Picard and Troi stay perfectly in character, and yet I learned new things about both of them. Ariana manages to highlight Picard's 'Frenchness', and *not* by hitting you over the head with some stereotype -- it's just a natural part of his identity (takes one to know one, I guess ;)). As for Troi, well, let's just say, I liked her a lot better after reading this story.[2]
This is a rare pair in TNG (Picard/Crusher and Riker/Troi being the popular Het pairings) but stands out as my favorite story in TNG among the ones I've read. I think it's that both characters' reflections on each other are so funny at times and so spot on, very much as I myself see each. Not a pairing I usually see, and I'm no fan of Troi's character ordinarily, but Ariana more than makes them work in this story[3]
I thought Picard and particularly Troi's character were beautifully drawn here.[4]
