Reactions and Reviews

Look out for Whole of an Ancient Evil in Fire & Ice 1: poetic, angsty, heated and crackingly-paced, this is a vision of Avon taking the Clone as a sexually-accessible version of who he really wants, and Blake discovering quite how far the Federation torturers have gone with mind-control. Probably my favourite of her stories, even if I do wish she'd written a sequel.[1]

This is another one that's online, so I'd read it before. My feelings for this are pretty complicated. I like large parts of it - and I quite like the concept (I'm going to have to publicly refute what I said about not wanting clone stories, as it's becoming patently not true) - specifically the parts about Blake having to live with his clone and feeling awkward and upset, and yet strangely brotherly. I find the language hard going, though, and I find the ending unsatisfying - which I think is a symptom of what I find unsatisfying about the whole thing, namely that the clone isn't ever really treated as his own man, so he might as well be a Blake!android or whatever, so I can't care much about his relationship with Avon. It's a shame, give that what I like about this pairing is the passion and the disagreements on policy... even the real Blake is just wandering around in the background, upset about the fact of the clone, but not that interested in Avon's mind- As a fic, it's definitely worth reading, and it is interesting, but it doesn't make me feel very much, which - is a problem.[2]
