The LiveJournal community Virgule was started in the spring of 2003 after a number of aca-fen met at the International Conference for the Fantastic in the Arts (ICFA) in March of that year. Discussions of fandom and fan productions, especially in the area of slash, led Hederahelix to found the community as a place for theoretical discussions of slash.
The community is not limited to academics but rather serves as a place for those who enjoy theoretical discussions and analysis as well as squee about source texts and fan productions. The community became a focus for sharing ideas as well as information about academic activities online and offline.
This is not to be confused with the Virgule Mailing List of a decade earlier.
As of 2017, virgule has 626 posts; 1,798 comments; and 289 members.[1]
