Vikings is an Irish-Canadian historical drama television series written and created by Michael Hirst for the television History Channel. Filmed in Ireland, it premiered on 3 March 2013 in the United States and Canada. Vikings is inspired by the sagas of Viking Ragnar Lothbrok, one of the best-known legendary Norse heroes and notorious as the scourge of England and France.[1]

  • Historical (in)accuracy: There has been much discussion and commentary on the accuracy of the television series. The tradition of oral history within Scandinavian cultures during this time period, means that the Saga of Ragnar Lothbruk is itself an unreliable resource. The TV show does take great liberties with historical events; depicting the raid on Lindisfarne (793AD) and the Siege of Paris (845AD) and attributing both of these events to Ragnar Lothbruk.[2][3][4] Also the historical Rollo, was not in anyway related to Ragnar Lothbruk. There was also much discussion about the historical accuracy of hairstyles, clothing, tattoos and other cultural norms in Viking society.

  • The most popular slash pairing is Athelstan/Ragnar (Athelnar)
  • Ragnar/Lagertha is a favourite canon het pairing due to the relationship being among equals, with a strong female character.
  • The moresome pairing Athelstan/Ragnar/Lagertha is a popular threesome combo.
  • The pairing of Ivar/OC has grown in popularity. Ivar is the crippled son of Ragnar whose cruelty means he has had very few love interests in canon. OFCs paired with Ivar are often willful women, capable of standing up to the cruel young man.
  • The canon het pairing of Gisla/Rollo is less common. Some fans were disappointed that the show rushed the development of their relationship after their political marriage, and many fics explore the evolution of their relationship.
