Vampire Academy is a six-part YA series by Richelle Mead. It is followed by the Bloodlines series, also a six-part series.

A film adaptation was released on February 7, 2014.

The world of Vampire Academy borrows from Romanian folklore about vampires, namely that there are two varieties - Moroi and Strigoi. In the novels, Strigoi are evil and similar to the Dracula-style vampire. Moroi wield elemental magic and drink blood only from willing humans, and are protected from Strigoi by half-vampire guardians called Dhampirs.

Fandom Overview

The Vampire Academy series and the series that follows, Bloodlines, have a virtually nonexistent boundary between the two fandoms. This is because of how closely the books are related and how many characters they share. The most active part of the Vampire Academy fandom, and Bloodlines fandom, is on Tumblr, though the fandom also has a large presence on Twitter. Due to the nature of the books, most of the fans tend to be young adults

Popular Characters and Pairings

Rosemarie "Rose" Hathaway - Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir and the protagonist of the Vampire Academy series. She is a Guardian-in-training and later a Guardian, whose charge is her best friend Lissa Dragomir. At age fifteen she was brought back from the dead by Lissa, a spirit user, causing her to be shadow-kissed and to share a one-way bond with Lissa. She is most commonly paired with Dimitri Belikov, with smaller amounts of support for her and Adrian Ivashkov, Lissa Dragomir, or Mason Ashford.

Dimitri Belikov - A renowned Dhampir Guardian and Rose's main love interest. For the better part of the series he is Rose's mentor which, paired with the facts that they are seven years apart and will have Lissa as their charge, makes their love forbidden. He is almost exclusively paired with Rose, though their is rare support for him and Natasha Ozera.

Vasilisa "Lissa" Dragomir - Lissa is a Royal Moroi and the last known member of her family. She is Rose's best friend, and is a spirit user. She is most often paired with Christian Ozera, with some interest in shipping her with Rose.

Christian Ozera - He is a disgraced member of the Royal Ozera family and a fire user, as well as being Lissa's main love interest. He is most often paired with Lissa, but occasionally he is paired with Rose.

Adrian Ivashkov - Introduced in Frostbite, the second Vampire Academy novel, Adrian is a Royal Moroi spirit user, and nephew to Queen Tatiana Ivashkov, the Moroi queen. He is enchanted by Rose, and becomes fast friends with Lissa. He dates Rose in the entire fifth book and for the majority of the sixth. He reappears in the Bloodlines series, where he is the love interest for Sydney Sage. He is most commonly paired with Sydney though he and Rose have support too.

Eddie Castile - A Dhampir friend of Rose and Lissa's. He is also the former best friend of Mason Ashford, a deceased Dhampir. He later appears in the Bloodline series with his main love interest being Jill Mastrano.

Sydney Sage - Sydney is an Alchemist, a human tasked with preventing other humans from not finding out about vampires. She first appears in the fourth book, Blood Promise, and is the protagonist of the Bloodlines series. She is most frequently shipped with Adrian, as he is her main romantic interest in that series.

Dimitri Versus Adrian

Throughout the series Rose has a love triangle with Dimitri and Adrian, and because of this, fans took sides based on who they wanted Rose paired with. For years fans passionately argued over who Rose should be in a relationship with, even after the series' conclusion where she ends up with Dimitri. The arguments continued until the first book in the Bloodlines series was released, at which point most fans started shipping Adrian with Sydney. Now, finding shippers of Rose and Adrian is not common, but they are still present.

Film

Preger Entertainment optioned the rights to Vampire Academy in June of 2010. It was announced in December of 2012 that Dan Waters would be writing the script and his brother, Mark Waters, would be directing it. On February first of 2013, Danila Kozlovsky, Zoey Deutch, and Lucy Fry were cast as Dimitri Belikov, Rose Hathaway and Lissa Dragomir respectively. The movie started filming during the last week of May 2013. The movie was released on February seventh 2014. The movie bombed the box office and received a 10% approval rating from critics. Despite this, the fans were happy with the movie.

In June of 2014 it was announced that the majority of the funds for a sequel film, to be based on the second book "Frostbite", were raised. It was also announced that a campaign would be launched to get the rest of the funds for the movie.
