Fan since I can't remember when. I distinctly remember the first Dr Who episode and the first Doctor is still 'my' Doctor. I watched Niel Armstrong take his first small step live on a flickering black and white TV in the middle of the night in Ireland. I watched the original Star Trek when it came out and read the books too and any other SF books I could get hold of in Dublin.
In early 1979 I was working in England and went down to London and while I was there I visited "Dark they were and Golden eyed' the long since gone comic shop in St Annes Court, Soho and Forbidden Planet in Denmark St - it's moved into much bigger premises since. Leaving Forbidden Planet I saw a flier for Brighton Worldcon later that year. I had never heard of conventions before that. I copied down the details and sent off my subscription and went to it.
I remember the girl in the masquerade wearing 10ft high butterfly wings and little else; I remember the Filk circle but I don't remember any of the songs except that I sang a song of about lonesome spacemen I had sang in the folk club a year before.
